Preconception Tool

The Greater Adirondack Perinatal Network has developed an innovative new medical Tool that engages providers and their patients on the topic of preconceptual health.

The need for this Tool was identified in a 1999 survey of area prenatal providers that inquired about their preconception screening and counseling practices.  Since yearly gynecological exams continue to be the backdrop for much of the screening and counseling being done, the Tool was designed with that application in mind.

However, the Tool's use in actual practice taught us that it has many applications.  It works in clinics and private practices alike.  It is effective with teenagers and with women of childbearing age, especially those who've never given much consideration to their pre-pregnancy health.

The creation of a medical Tool represents a departure from the work we typically do.  However, it is a project we have embraced.  We feel this Tool provides a concrete method for increasing preconceptual screening and counseling, while reducing the rate of unplanned pregnancy.

The ways this Tool can help you as the provider:

*Routinely discuss reproductive plans with patients.

*Review the basic elements of preconception care with all women.

*Consider the possibility of future pregnancy when making medical decisions.

*For each disease process, review the core issues and individualize care.

*Prescribe folic acid supplements.

*DISCUSS RISKY BEHAVIOR.

We hope that you agree.  If you are interested in trying this Tool, please fill out the information on the page About You or call us at (518) 761-0300, ext 217.

This Tool was developed through a grant from the March of Dimes.  Click here to learn more about the March of Dimes.
